Any martial art if used correctly and enough effort placed is good. Personally I’d choose karate because there’s a bit more balance between hands and feet. Then again, feet are more powerful than hand techniques, but kicks are also slower and reduce balance. There’s pros and cons, in the end it’s personal preference.
That is too broad of a question to answer. There are dozens of different styles of karate and at least two major schools of TKD. Each instructor has different skills that he teaches within those and, of course, each student will absorb these differently.
Karate will teach you a variety of techniques utilised in hard sparring against resisting opponents. If you do a full-contact style of Karate such as Kyokushin, Ashihara or Shidokan, you will become a lethal weapon.
Tae Kwon Do is a sport that emphasises tappy kicks and point-sparring. Tae Kwon Do students often fight with their hands down, and they are useless once their opponent gets within clinch range.
As always it is the individual and what they were taught. Many schools teach only sport these days. Both TKD and Karate have good schools and bad ones. The instructor and what he teaches is the main difference.

EDIT:
Rob B There are more than 75 different styles of Tae Kwon Do recognized as valid styles in Korea. If you are referring to organizations, then there are more than two of them.
If it is kyokushin karate, then the answer is karate because the kyokushin style of karate is a full contact style. Modern tae kwon do is more of a performance art that a fighting art or martial art. Traditional tae kwon do is similar to karate, so the answer would be neither. You should take boxing instead.
Duh.. The instructor.

I’m just waiting for someone to say MMA.
But it all depends on who teaches you, how well you absorb the info and how well you use the skills that are taught.
None. It’s the person teaching it because the style doesn’t exist… until you create its movements.
